    Great Shakeout 2019 Debrief

On October 17, 2019 our participated in the Great Shakeout Drill. This means that at approximately 10:15am we simulated a major earthquake and put our Incident Command System into action.

Various teams, such as the Search and Rescue Team, and the First Aid Team, practiced systems and procedures to help ensure we are prepared to respond effectively in an emergency.

Parents participated in our simulation by coming to request their child as they might do in a real emergency. This helped  our teams at the Request and Reunion Gates practice the systems and procedures  we have in place to reunite our families, even when this means having to share unpleasant news.

We were able to evacuate all students in under 3 minutes despite one of our major exits being blocked. We were also able to account for all staff and students, and we were able to search and clear all rooms in under 34 minutes.

We sent more detailed information with your child. Should you have any questions feel free to call our main office at (323) 269-8161.

How Do I Reunite With My Child FoLLOwiNG an Emergency?

In case of an emergency, please do not go to the main office in search of your child.  When it is safe to pick up your child, you will need to follow a special process to ensure everyone’s safety.

    1. To pick up your child/children, please report to the Request Gate next to the cafeteria off of Cesar Chavez Avenue and request that your child be sent out. You must bring I.D. and you must be listed on the child’s emergency card in order to check a child out.

    2. You will then report to the Reunion Gate on Dangler Ave., where your child will be brought to you.

    Principal's Message

    Dear Brooklyn Avenue School Families,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! It is with great pride and excitement that I introduce myself as your new principal of Brooklyn Avenue School.  I have dedicated the last fifteen years of my life to the communities of Boyle Heights and South L.A. in numerous capacities: as a classroom teacher, teacher leader, EL program adviser, and school administrator. I have worked collaboratively with all members of the school and local community to ensure students graduate with the necessary skills to be successful throughout their school years and into college, careers, and the future. I am honored and humbled to have this opportunity to lead a school community with such a rich history of excellence.

Nothing excites me more than seeing the faces of children learning! I am passionate about teaching and learning, about offering all children a high-quality education, and about fostering an environment that is positive, safe, and student-centered.  Children deserve to walk into a school every day that challenges them academically, builds their character, and prepares them to solve real-world problems thoughtfully and creatively.  I commit to you that I will do my very best to ensure we continue and build upon the Road Runner tradition of excellence.

We cannot hope to achieve these goals without teachers, parents, and the community as our partners in education. I value the talents and knowledge you bring to our school and feel very strongly that your role is vital to the success of students. Throughout the school year, we will offer many opportunities for you to be involved; I encourage you to play an active part in helping all our children thrive.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have throughout the year regarding your child’s progress.  Working together, we can have a profound impact on the lives of every single student.

I look forward to meeting you all very soon.

    Marissa Martínez, Principal
